https://www.jamesrosenc.ca/comics daily 0.75 2026-04-14 https://www.jamesrosenc.ca/comics/delay monthly 0.5 2026-04-14 https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/687af3db0e285c33c228d8ce/78abe1cc-ed6f-406c-9cb3-2f326d09ddd7/Untitled_Artwork+%282%29.png Comics - Delay - Make it stand out 02/13/2025 so i get my hair cut at college and ossington. feeling good, feeling myself. i see the 506 east pass through the window while i pay. oh well, i’ll hop on the next one. transit says the next one comes in 15 minutes, it’ll be faster to walk to dundas and take the 505. why not? gotta go that way anyway, might as well. i admire the houses walking down ossington, families probably inside after all the snow we got last night. i see two dogs and their owners playing in the snow. i remember the last time i went this way, way back in the summer. i waited at dundas and ossington half an hour for the streetcar. hopefully not this time! i get to dundas, and the streetcar is about halfway down the street, unmoving. expected arrival: 5 minutes a woman sits at a table by the window inside the communist’s daughter, the bar labeled outside with the title “nazare snack bar.” if you know you know. this guy walks buy on his bike, smoking a cigarette i think. he knocks on the window but the girl doesn’t notice. he hesitates, and keeps walking. moments later she turns her head, as if she felt the presence, but just missed him. he went into the convenience store. i wonder how they knew each other. two guys wander my direction, hitting one of their weed pens back and forth. “the streetcar’s not coming, it broke down.” “for real?” “yeah, we just got off. it’s going to get towed.” “shit, thanks for telling me.” i stop and think about it for a bit. did i want to wait half an hour, maybe more? i watch the guys trudge through the snow in their sneakers, thinking. expected arrival: 5 minutes (still) might as well start walking. those guys are anyway. the ride from mccaul was at least 20 minutes, it’ll be a long walk. i start the trek down dundas. i forgot to charge my phone before i left, so it’s down to 13%. no distractions, then. just me and my tunes and the twinkle in the air that comes with the slowness that follows a snowstorm. i don’t know how far i am but thankful i’m just going straight until i recognize where i am. i pass cafes, shops, murals, churches, trinity bellwoods, carefully stepping through the slush around the corners and crosswalks. a few dispensaries. i ponder it as i walk, i haven’t done that in a while, and by the third weed banner i take a note from the streetcar guys, and walk into a storefront with windows plastered in white paper and green leaves. this dispo was definitely the front half of this older gentleman’s house. the front of the shop bore wicker partition, antique couches with beaded pillows, a glass coffee table, a red rug, and several plants. at the counter, a wall cutout held an incense burner, a portrait of a hindu god (is it shiva?), and a small beaded curtain which i could hear his wife talk to him through i grabbed a couple prerolls and some nag champa. “this is the best kind.” the cold whapped me in the face on my way out. i resumed my journey, contemplating the unlit joint between my fingers, kids with snowpants and sleds storming opposite me towards the park. making snowballs, tumbling over before regaining enough balance to blunder forwards. further east. several streetcars have passed me westbound, but not a single east. i guess i made the right choice. i continue, pace slow and even. reading signs, taking notes on my surroundings. thinking how wide-eyed and silly i felt. i pull off to the side and place the filter gently between my teeth. i shield myself from the wind and take a few pulls, maybe one too many, i feel the weight in my head, eyes, wonder how far i can get before my mouth feels like sandpaper. further down dundas, slowly stumbling on buildings i recognize; toronto western hospital, sanderson library, the market food trucks, the dragon city mall. i can’t seem to block out the consant streams of chatter in my head, mostly nonsense. the work i need to do once i get back to school, actually complete in time with the deadline earlier that day. work, my schedule, working different days because it’ll be reading week. the crushing existential dread of being a twenty-something. trying to seemingly catch up to the level of adulthood of other people around me. feeling stunted. like i’m still a kid. i can’t even drive. i’ve never lived without my parents. i’m about to graduate. i’m going to be an adult in the world. how am i going to get an apprenticeship? how am i going to support myself? how am i ever going to own a home? how am i going to have that tough conversation? should i get a regular big boy job? should i invest in something? don’t even get me started on the weight of things outside my own personal bubble. the state of things, politically. (the western descent into fascism, the vocal support of genocide, the pandemic everyone stopped caring about, the rising cost of everything, the prospect of ecological collapse that keeps me up at night, and so on.) what it would feel like being hit by a car as a pedestrian. my ears block out the street noise for a second as i imagine the initial shock my body slamming the pavement, blood in my ears, pooling around my head like a halo. i have to stop for a moment, physically shake the thought out of my head. just keep walking. there’s no use dwelling on any of those things right now, but they stick to the edges of my mind like gum. i can’t change these things, can’t do everything. i can only control my scope, my own little blue world. it’s something i need to constantly remind myself, so the news of another massacre ordered or species extinct doesn’t send me into a tailspin. you can’t do everything. you can take care of yourself, you can take care of others. sometimes, that is enough. sometimes just getting out of bed is enough. feeling safe, or secure, or comfortable, isn’t static, it’s an ever-changing goalpost. you do what you have to do on a given day to be okay, and so on. sometimes that okay helps you in the long run, and sometimes it doesn’t. i need to cut back on smoking. passing now some of my own personal landmarks; hard luck bar, the kensington market cat on a chair, house of gourmet. i consider stopping in for a bowl of congee, warm up my insides. i’m a little hungry. tempting, but not today. i just have to get back to school. chinatown greets me like a warm light, finally i know the bulk of my journey is complete. i stride forward, summoning a burst of energy that comes with knowing you’re close to the finish line. colourful buildings, fruit markets, stalls still outside despite the cold, warm inviting restaurants. beverly street. home stretch. the thought of a nice, full takeout container, i can almost smell it. past the AGO; its squares of glass, metal panes, heavy pillars of cement. what if? i keep going. what if? what if? what if? a nagging question burdens every thought and decision. i veer to the right, protected under the trunk of the Couch Monster. his metal exterior looks soft, plush, deceiving. i touch his cold skin, still asking myself every useless if. i could ask and ask and ask, forever spiraling. or, i could slow down, take a breath, take in the beauty of the mundanity around me. the street i know so well, the street i said would be mine, seven years ago, so far in the past but also, just like yesterday. and it was mine, as much as any place could be, as much as something as un-ownable as land could be, as un-individual as a city street. what if i do turn out okay? what if i finally get what i want? what
